Hungary’s state health insurance scheme is based on compulsory health insurance for all Hungarian citizens. The scheme is comprehensive in coverage and open to all, however, informal out-of-pocket expenses feature widely. Furthermore, as UNION Biztosító confirmed through a nationwide survey it ran in mid-2012, many citizens are concerned about the quality of care provided, in particular the long waiting times for treatment and poor communication with doctors and medical staff.

Although worry about medical problems is widespread, private health insurance is not yet well-established in Hungary. Against this background, UNION's survey also revealed that around two thirds of respondents would welcome having medical insurance included in their employee benefits, even if they had to pay premiums for this themselves.

Advantages for employers and employees

When the government of Hungary introduced tax deductions on health insurance premiums paid by employers at the beginning of 2012, UNION Biztosító was ready. The insurer had been active in the private health insurance field since 2006, and now built on its experience, plus the survey feedback, to provide a solution to meet the market need.

PrivateMed delivers a win-win situation for both employers and employees. Not only can employers deduct the premiums from tax, this is also a new way to strengthen employee loyalty, while ensuring that employees receive excellent medical care and can get back to productive work as soon as possible. A useful feature is that the plan permits differentiation between different grades of employees.

Employees benefit from outstanding medical service and no queues in facilities all over the country. The medical plan not only covers costs, but also provides important services that include the arrangement of medical appointments, diagnostic procedures using medical imaging, and one-day surgeries within a few days. Payments for services are made directly to the healthcare institution – this cashless outpatient service also means that plan members do not need to pay out-of-pocket expenses or worry about costs or gratuities.

Recognition by the market

Since its launch, PrivateMed has received recommendations from the Department of Family Medicine at Semmelweis University and the Hungarian Association of Family Practitioner Trainers, for increasing the standard of outpatient care in Hungary and for boosting patient satisfaction.
